Step Brothers

Before discussing the actual movie, I need to address the clever advertising that this movie generated. By giving me just a tiny bit of information about the actual movie, and a few good laughs, I was dying to see this movie. I must admit, I have been a Will Ferrell fan ever since his days on SNL, but I was not overly impressed with his very early films (Ladies Man, A Night at the Rockbury, etc). But he came into his own in Zoolander and has been able to produce classic, stupid humor at it's finest ever since. Both Ferrell and John C. Reilly have impeccable timing...they are able to deliver almost any line in a humorous manner. In addition, these boys are the kings of improvisation! I would love to read the script that they are given and compare it to the end result because I am confident that there would be hundreds of lines that were added off the top of their heads. Another thing that I love about Ferrell is that he has been working on developing himself into more than just a comedic actor...he has shown (in such films as Stranger than Fiction, Winter Passing, and Bewitched) that he has some depth to him.

My major complaint with this style of comedy is that the writers try so hard to develop a plot with some kind of moral to it, but the moral usually does not fit well with the story. I often feel like the comedy was written, and a story was developed around specific jokes and ideas as opposed to writing jokes to fit the story...and the problem with this is that it is often a stretch to actually make the plot fit with the jokes. Step Brothers fell right into this category. There were definitely funny moments, but as a whole it was hard for me to believe the plot, and it did not move me the way a quality film should. I was not laughing so hard that I was crying (as I did watching Talledaga Nights...praying to infant Jesus gets me giggling just thinking about it), which is what a quality comedy should do to me. However, I would not say this movie was terrible...it had some crude moments, but was overall a pretty funny film. Therefore, it will receive 3 pigs.

Jorden: I am shocked you gave this movie 3 pigs. I totally disagree. This movie barely earned 1 pig! I might be willing to jump it up to 1.5 pigs because I did laugh a couple of times (most of those scenes can be seen in the previews).

I can not in good conscience reccommend this movie to anyone. For heaven's sake, he rubs his scrotum (excuse the language) on a drum set - and they show it! We won't even get into the creepy obsession that results in very uncomfortable moments between Dale and the step-brother's wife. And how pointless was the subplot of the sleep walking?

To me, this movie was a hodge-podge of jokes that Judd Apatow (the producer) threw together because in the height of his popularity, he had to give the studio a movie and the jokes just hadn't fit into his other hits (Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin).

In my opinion, 1 pig!

Next on Czech and Kent, we will be looking at Tom Cruise's surprise role in Tropic Thunder.

Local cable t.v. here we come!

Sho: I understand where your previous comment is coming from, because I also felt that Step Brothers was a mediocre comedy. HOWEVER, I would say it was a fairly average comedy and deserves 3 pigs because it is far superior to many of the other comedies we have recently seen. Tell me that you still think it deserves 1 pig after you have seen Mama's Boy and The Brothers Solomon...
