You may not believe this, but my first experience with Chariots of Fire occurred just recently. I know, I know...it's a "classic". There is no specific reason why I never watched it before, only that in my younger years I was always bored by old movies. And part of me is glad I waited so long to view it because my tastes have matured greatly and I feel that I was able to appreciate it more at this point in my life. It might be unfair of me to review this movie during an Olympic year, because I love the Olympics so much and was overjoyed to take an Olympic break in order to watch a movie about the Olympics. I personally am not a runner, and would rather die than run for fun...but the expressions on the runners faces during the very first scene of the movie almost made me want to take up running...ALMOST.
This film was beautifully made and deserved it's academy award for best picture over such films as On Golden Pond and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Today, I don't know if an action flick like Raiders would even be nominated against these dramatic giants, but back in 1981, Raiders was groundbreaking. Chariots of Fire is such a simple movie...it does not focus on character development or complex plot twists, but instead allows the viewer to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of England as well as the award winning musical score while following two men on their search for Olympic gold. The film discusses such issues as religious differences and class distinction, but these issues are merely accessories to the overall feel of the film. Would I watch it again? Yes. That's what makes it a great movie. That's why I have to give it 5 pigs.
