This is another Scorsese film staring Robert De Niro in one of his most disturbing roles. I had heard of this movie for years, but did not know anything about it (except that a young Jodie Foster played a call girl). Due to De Niro's social conflicts in the film and his awkward behavior, I was waiting for him to kill dozens of people. However, as crazy as he appeared, it was almost rewarding to see him become a hero to the community at the end of the film. The real story in this film is the lonely and unstable Vietnam vet coming to terms with himself and overcoming his inability to relate to other human beings. This film also has one of the most famous dialogues in the history of film..."You talking to me? You talking to me? Well, I'm the only one here...." That scene alone has become a classic and will be a claim to fame for De Niro for the rest of his life. In addition, it encouraged dozens of young people to stare at themselves in the mirror and quote these lines over and over again. I wish the film had delved more into the psychosis of the Vietnam vet...where did this inability to develop an emotionally appropriate relationship with others come from? What was keeping him up at nights? I am the type of person who always wonders why people do the things they do, and I am curious as to what happened in this man's life to make him become the Taxi Driver.... This is a great movie that deserves to be among the classics...but it is not appropriate for everyone. Hence, 4 pigs.
