Hancock

Our Monday Movie Night tradition continues...with Hancock. We were both really excited to see this movie (due to our love for Will Smith and Jason Bateman...as well as the humorous trailers). However, we were a little disappointed, to say the least. The first disappointment was the potty mouth on Will Smith...he has always been one of those actors that I feel is very wholesome... and he usually does good family movies...which we thought this was. In addition, we discovered that this movie was originally rated R due to the adult content...specifically Hancock's flying under the influence of alcohol, and some scenes that were removed, like a statutory rape scene. They wanted a PG-13 movie, but they made an R rated one...so they changed a few things to finally get their PG-13 rating after the third submission. In addition, apparently this script had been running around Hollywood for more than a decade with no takers. Let me explain the major flaw of the movie as I see it...

This film was a comedy, action, romantic drama...which had WAY too many genre's to fit into one movie. The comedy was pretty good for the first half of the movie, as was the action. I was engaged an anxious to see where the movie would take us. But then, half way through, it took a turn for the worst and introduced this crazy, mixed up love story that I really could have done without. Basically, I felt the movie was a little schizophrenic. I think it could have been a great action comedy...OR a good romantic drama...but putting it all in one movie was a mistake. Why would they not want to make more money with two different movies? Bottom line...Will Smith and Jason Bateman were good, but the writers needed to focus on either A or B. I'm giving this one a 2 1/2 pigs...my lowest rating so far. But don't worry, I just saw one that was worse...I'll write about it later.
