My hubby and I love watching horror movies, and I am always looking for one that actually scares me. It takes a lot to scare me these days, specifically because I only really get scared when I think something could really happen...and I do not believe in zombies. So, this movie was not very scary to me, but there were several moments that I knew would cause normal people to scream. This is a George A. Romero flick and, if any of you know George A. Romero, you know that he is pretty much obsessed with zombies. You may remember him from such films as Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead. In his past work, he has become known for his incredible zombies, and for the graphic way that his zombies are dismembered...and dismember the living. To be completely honest, I think Diary of the Dead is quite possibly his best work. It is filmed in a completely different style, using (it appears) only two cameras, and filmed in only 23 consecutive days. The movie follows college film students as they are making a mummy movie that turns into a documentary of the events that unfold over the next few days. One of Romero's strengths is that his work is not too serious, but just serious enough that it is entertaining. This film has some of the most gory scenes I have ever seen, but it is not overpowered by gore like most zombie/horror flicks. The characters were developed just enough that you either empathize with them, or they are so annoying that you can't wait to see how they die. The camera angles and work in general are priceless! Overall, if you are a horror fan, I highly recommend this movie. And I would give this movie four pigs in the horror genre, but as a film in general...it goes down to three and a half pigs.
