Be Kind Rewind

When I first saw the previews for this movie, I was intrigued. The premise of the film is ingenious...all the videos in a video rental store are erased, so the people who erased them film their own version of the movies and rent them out to people in the neighborhood. Add Jack Black to the agenda, and you have comedy at it's purest. The writer/director, Michel Gondry, is not very well known...he co-wrote and directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which was very creative, but totally "out there")...and a few other lesser known films, many of them french. The biggest blunder of the film was to cast Mos Def in the starring role alongside Jack Black and Danny Glover. I don't know about anyone else, but I can never understand a word that comes out of this guys mouth! He is a mumbler, and seems a little mentally challenged sometimes...and he is currently signed on to film 8 more movies in the next 3 years! With such actors as Adrian Brody, Jonathan Rhys Meyers (who I LOVE in The Tudors!), Don Cheadle, Charlize Theron, Mark Whalberg, Steve Buscemi, and William H. Macy! Who keeps putting this guy in movies? Ok, back to the movie.

The idea of recreating old movies is hilarious and was carried out perfectly in this film. I only wish that they showed more of the recreated movies. I want you all to imagine the library scene in Ghostbusters...now, imagine that seen with Jack Black attacking the ghost with a fishing pole with a laser beam made out of Christmas garland...classic! Who comes up with this stuff?!?!? Now, I will admit, the plot was lacking, and I don't even know if it was really necessary to have a plot for this movie. For some movies, a plot is not really necessary...ok, I can't really think of any good movies that don't have a plot right off the top of my head, so if you can think of any, let me know. I would love to watch Jack Black recreate every movie ever made...it would be hilarious...and I could watch it all day. This movie is worth watching over again to verify that you have caught every tidbit of comedy. Overall, this is a fun, family-friendly film that all comedy lovers should see. However, due to the plot flaws, I will give it 3 1/2 pigs.
