Get Smart

For our new Monday night tradition this week, we went to see Get Smart. We love Steve Carell in pretty much everything he is in (even, sadly to say, Evan Almighty)...but Anne Hathaway has bugged me since the Princess Diaries. I think she is quite possibly one of the worst actresses of all time...I never believe the characters she tries to portray. She is always way over the top, and tries too hard to prove herself as an actress...she tries so hard that it just doesn't work. And this movie was no different. I enjoyed the movie very much, and laughed out loud several times, but I did not fall for her "I'm a hard-A secret agent" routine. I believe the film closely parallels the television series, which most other television-to-big-screen adaptations fail to do (Charlie's Angels, Starsky and Hutch, Dukes of Hazard, etc...). The film had a successful mixture of humorous and serious plot lines, and it was truly entertaining. The only area that I felt was a failure in this movie was the chemistry between Maxwell Smart and Agent 99...not only was I not able to believe that they were actually developing feelings for each other, but the one kiss in the movie was awkward and insincere. Overall, I think this movie was a success, and deserves three and a half pigs.
